Phil Onis is the director of Sydney Skydivers and the single most experienced skydiver in Australia with over 24,000 skydives.

Newspaper Article in Careerone June 2004

Forget being stuck in the office - a career in skydiving knows no bounds.
Samantha Stevens reports

If jumping out of a perfectly good aeroplane sounds like heaven on earth, then consider following Phil Onis' plunge into a skydiving career.

Mr Onis literally fell into the industry 20 years ago. Today, with 21,000 dives under his belt, he is considered the most experienced jumper in Australia.

"Every day is an adventure, every jump exhilarating, but it's not for everyone" Mr Onis said.

"Nothing is exciting without some element of danger or fear. The danger is the appeal. And skydiving attracts a colourful type of person. You have to be a little bit different."

There is no such thing as a dull day at the office. Mr Onis, 50, is chief instructor at Sydney Skydivers, where a days work consists of up to 10 jumps from 14,000ft and beyond.

Like Mr Onis, most of the dare-devil divers in the industry began skydiving as a hobby before their careers took off.

"It started as a recreation and became my life," he said. "I did my first dive at the age of 17, back when I was training as an industrial chemist.

"I didn't mind the work, but it was the stressful drive to and from the city to get there that made me think: 'Do I want to do this for the rest of my life ?'"

With the answer a resounding no, Mr Onis began his own carpet-cleaning business and skydived in his spare time. But his spare time eventually became full-time.

"Most people get into skydiving as a career the same way I did 20 years ago - starting recreationally then swinging over when there's a window.

"Once you have enough dives, you can go for a qualification." The qualification process is rigouress and the training is thorough because , naturally, mistakes in this job can be fatal.

there is a multi-tiered licensing process for various career paths within skydiving.

Divers with the combined love of filming and falling can work as a free fall camera operator. Tandem masters dive with an interpid first_timer harnessed to them for safety. Jump-masters and instructors cover the training both of divers and would-be instructors
